ESTELLE T. EWING Mrs. Estelle Todd Ewing, age 98, formerly of Anderson, passed away at the Presbyterian Home in West Columbia, SC, on Monday, January 5, 2015. Born in Iva, SC, on December 1, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Jessie James Todd and the late Geneva Burton Todd. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late James Edward Ewing until his death in 1953. Mrs. Ewing graduated from Iva High School where she played on the girls' basketball team. She earned her RN at Anderson County Hospital, now known as AnMed Health Medical Center. Her career as a dedicated, compassionate, and caring nurse brought her much joy throughout her career. Her compassion extended to her daily life. Having experienced poverty during The Great Depression, she was very aware of the needs of the less fortunate. Her circle of compassion included not only people, but also animals. She never turned her back on a hungry person or animal that crossed her path. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Anderson. Estelle was a mother and a friend. She and her daughters enjoyed traveling together and spending time at their second home on Harbor Island, SC, where Estelle enjoyed walking on the beach, playing in the surf and relaxing in a beach chair while reading. She will be deeply missed but we know she is in a better place, free from pain and suffering. She leaves all who knew and loved her many warm and happy memories. Survivors include 2 daughters, Judy Ewing Brown and her husband Harold, and Jimmie Ewing all of Lexington, SC; a sister, Reba DeBerry of Anderson; 2 nieces Margurite Davis Clark of Anderson and Candace DeBerry Cantrell and her husband Don, of Columbia; a nephew, Michael DeBerry of Atlanta, GA; also, she considered Gail Callaway Shumer of Anderson as a third daughter, since she spent much time with the family. In addition to her parents and her husband, James, she was preceded in death by a sister, the late Lucille Davis. The funeral service to celebrate and honor the life of Estelle Ewing will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at 1 PM, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Mitchell officiating. A private committal ceremony for the family will follow later.
