Estelle James Powell, age 92, of Anderson, entered her heavenly home on Monday, February 20, 2017, upon her death at National Health Care of Anderson, with family by her side. Born on October 24, 1924, in Athens, GA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Levi James and the late Elizabeth Murray James. For seventy-two years, Mrs. Powell was the loving and devoted wife of the late George Albert Powell until his death in 2013. Mrs. Powell was employed as a weaver at JP Stevens Appleton Plant for many years. Later, she was a sales person in the electronics department at Walmart on Liberty Highway, Anderson. She was a faithful member of Covenant Baptist Church where she, and her husband, Albert, was active with the Brotherhood Builders who built the first church facility. Mrs. Powell was also a nursery worker and a Girl Scout Leader for several years. Survivors include a son, Gene Powell and his wife, Vickie, of Anderson; a daughter, Pat Burdette of Anderson; a sister, Bertha Barton of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren, Scott Burdette, Kim Howell, and Doug Powell; a step-grandchild, Eric Bratcher; also surviving are seven great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Powell was affectionately known by her grandchildren as "Powpow." In addition to her parents and her husband, Albert, Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Maurice, and Hoyt James; and two sisters, Ida Lou and Annie Maude James. A funeral service to celebrate and honor the life of Mrs. Powell will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Reverend Dr. Steve Silvey and Reverend Robby Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the residence of Doug and Diane Powell, 103 Welborn Oak Way, Anderson, SC 29621, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Powell may be made to the Building Fund, Covenant Baptist Church, 4521 Liberty Highway, Anderson, SC 29621.
