Samuel Eston Purdy, age 89, of Iva, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2015, at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Iva on July 2, 1926, he was the son of the late Samuel Pierce Purdy and the late Amy McKee Purdy. For fifty-eight years, he was the devoted husband of the late Ella Grace Dunn Purdy who died in 2005. Mr. Purdy was a graduate of Iva High School and proudly served his country in the US Army during WW II. He retired after many years of employment in the maintenance department at Milliken in Abbeville. He was an active member of the American Legion in Iva and volunteered with RevIva and at the Iva Museum. Mr. Purdy was very civic minded and was involved in his community. He was a faithful, dedicated, and active member of Rocky River Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Treasurer, and in other volunteer capacities for many years. He was greatly beloved in his community and in his church. Left to carry on his legacy are his son, Tommy Purdy and his wife Peggy, of Anderson; a brother, Billy Purdy and his wife, Nadine, of Iva; two sisters, Doris Simpson of Iva and Hazel Norris and her husband, James, of Anderson; two grandchildren, Jamie Purdy Hamrick and her husband, Travis, of Marietta, GA, Christopher Purdy and his wife, Lindsey, of Anderson; four great-grandchildren Audrey and Andrew Hamrick and Adley and Lillian Purdy. In addition to his parents and his wife, Ella Grace, Eston was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ella Purdy, and two brothers, James and Carroll Purdy. A funeral service to celebrate and honor the life of Eston Purdy will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Rocky River Baptist Church, with Rev. Bobby Jones, Rev. Brian Gray, and Rev. Randy Blank officiating. Interment will follow at the Rocky River Baptist Church Cemetery.
