Eugene Ellis Carey, Jr., age 72, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at his residence. Born in Anderson, SC on April 22, 1944, he was the son of the late Eugene Ellis Carey, Sr. and the late Lou Nelle Dunn Carey. He was a 1962 graduate of Boys High School and he proudly served his country as a Staff Sargent in the United States Army during Vietnam. Eugene was given the Vietnam Gallantry Cross along with many other medals for his service and valor to include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Sharpshooter Medal (M-16) Army Expert Medal (M-14), and the Bronze Star. After he was honorably discharged he joined the Army National Guard. During his career he owned Carey's Texaco near Watson Village. After he closed Carey's Texaco he became a machinist and worked for Temco for several years and also Metco. He later started a landscaping business, Carey's Home Maintenance. Eugene attended Roberts Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his daughter, Wendy L. Carey, of Pelzer, SC; a brother, Terrell Neal Carey, Sr. and his wife Robin, of Belton, SC; three sisters, Cheryl Connor and her husband Keith, Judy Cantrell, and Tina Allen and her husband Calvin, all of Anderson, SC; and three grandchildren, Nickole Storme Leitner, Hannah Ayla Maria Leitner, Jakob Kade Leitner and his canine companion: Big Boy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his former wife, Johnnie Loskoski Carey; and a brother, Larry Michael Carey, Sr. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran's Cemetery with Military Honors.
