Eugene E. Paquin, age 85, passed away April 22, 2021, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC.
Born August 12, 1935, he was the only child of Eleanor and Edouard Paquin of Cranston, Rhode Island. He is predeceased by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Elaine Young Paquin who died just one year before him, April 13, 2020. He is also predeceased by his nephew, Maynard Robbins (Bob) Young.
Gene and Elaine met while teaching in Yarmouth, ME. Gene, a music teacher and Elaine, a home economics teacher, nurtured their friendship as they engaged their students in all aspects of musical theater. Gene directed the student productions and Elaine, a consummate seamstress, designed and made the costumes along with her students.
Eugene grew up in Warwick, RI. He earned a BA degree from Julliard School of Music in New York City and spent a year in Vienna, Austria honing his talent as an oboist, a rather rare breed of concert musician. He earned a Masters in Library Science from the University of Connecticut and eventually worked as a Media Specialist for Anderson Public Schools.
Prior to their move to Anderson, Gene and Elaine opened a travel agency in Bonita Springs, Florida, another endeavor that combined their mutual love of music and travel, a favorite destination being London, England theaters. If one mentioned to Gene a show they attended in New York, he would deadpan, "We saw it in London."
Gene is survived by many members of Elaine's family, one of whom described Uncle Gene as "a kind man with a sharp wit who accepted others."
Gene's family in the Northeast wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the many doctors, nurses, and support staff at AnMed for their kindness, patience and professionalism as they cared for Gene during the last month of his life. We are grateful for the quick response of staff at Publix Market when Gene experienced a cardiac arrest while shopping. His brief stays at Linley Park and Rainey House were also filled with compassionate care.
Lastly and very importantly, we will always treasure the thoughtfulness and support so generously given by Gene's friends, Otto Haugland and John Stathakis.
