Franklin Bard Brutzman, 75, died Jan. 28, 2016, surrounded by family at his home in Townville, S.C., after an extended illness. Known to all as Bard, he was happiest taking slow boat rides across Hartwell Lake, a cold beverage in hand, dogs at his feet, and friends and family riding along. Bard was born on March 6, 1940, in Scranton, Pa., but he lived most of his life in the South. He was a consulting actuary for the Tillinghast and Towers Perrin firms in Atlanta, Ga., and Charlotte, N.C., for nearly 30 years. Bard's professional life started in San Francisco with the Wyatt firm following his graduation from Stanford University in 1961, where he was a student of mathematics and philosophy. The son of a rising executive at Equifax, Bard lived all over the United States as a child, spending his school years in Omaha, Chicago, Cincinnati and Pasadena, among other places. The constants in his life were baseball and the oboe as well as a rambling and ever-growing circle of friends. His quick wit, sly grin, generosity and undying loyalty earned him a multi-generational following that extended back decades. Despite his irascible nature, Bard knew no strangers - only friends he hadn't met yet. "Think where a man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends." - W.B. Yeats Bard leaves behind his loving wife and constant companion, Marie Brutzman. He is also survived by his four children - Christian, Joseph, Mary and Anna - their spouses and his nine grandchildren. Bard was predeceased by his first wife, Laura Ann Brutzman, as well as his parents, Franklin J. and Mary Davies Brutzman. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Bard's care team: Dr. Reza Nazemzadeh of the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, N.C., who for years guided Bard and his family with compassion, intelligence and good humor; Dr. Charles B. Rich Jr., Bard's primary care physician in Charlotte; the Seneca, S.C., Cancer Institute; the care teams at AnMed Health and Fellowship Health & Rehab in Anderson, S.C.; and the whole team at Hospice of the Upstate, also in Anderson. A memorial service will be held in Bard's honor at 1 p.m. Feb. 20 at the McDougald Funeral Home, 2211 N. Main St. in Anderson, SC, 29621. A gathering at the family home in Townville will follow.
