Fredrick H. Wheeler, age 77, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at his home in Townville, SC. He was born October 17, 1945, in Logansport, Indiana, to Boyd H. Wheeler and Martha Flora Wheeler.
Fred attended Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, and received a degree in mechanical engineering in 1967, followed by ten years active duty in the United States Air Force and eighteen years in the Reserves. He retired from the military as a Lieutenant Colonel. Upon completion of his active military service, Fred worked for Michelin North America for thirty-two years, and retired as the head of the military products division. During retirement, Fred dedicated his time to serving others as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, an organization he cared passionately about.
While his military service and dedicated career are laudable achievements, Fred was most proud of his family, to which he was completely devoted. Fred married his soulmate, Jan Sodaro, in 1968, and they spent a lifetime by each other's sides, raising one child along the way. In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Tonya and three grandchildren: Peyton, Molly, and Greyson. He leaves behind an extended community of friends.
Fred was a kind hearted, hardworking man, who knew that the true treasures in life were the simple ones. A day spent fishing with his family, a good meal surrounded by his loved ones, a lazy day catching any football game on t.v. with his wife by his side; these were the things he cherished. More importantly, "Grandpa" never missed a gymnastics recital, volleyball match, or baseball game. And, once you met Fred, you were a friend for life; he never turned his back on an opportunity to help another. He was a humble, intelligent man of integrity, who led by example.
