Gary Thomas Hedden, age 84, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, April 3, 2016, with his beloved wife, Pauline, by his side. Born in Anderson on February 19, 1932, he was the son of the late James S. Hedden and the late Rosa Cleo Reynolds Hedden.
Mr. Hedden was a graduate of Anderson Boys' High School, and then proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, where he was a radio communicator. He later attended Carolina School of Commerce. For approximately forty years, Mr. Hedden was employed at Ryobi/Singer, retiring as a traffic manager. He was an active parishioner at Saint Joseph Catholic Church for as long as his health permitted. Mr. Hedden was a third degree member of Knights of Columbus Council # 8295. While at Saint Joseph, he served as an usher and assisted in counting the weekly offering. Mr. Hedden enjoyed card games and playing badminton with his family.
Left to carry on his legacy are his devoted wife of sixty-three years, Pauline Galindo Hedden of the home; a son Chris Hedden (Susan) of Anderson; five precious daughters, Frances Bond (Samuel), Linda Harper, Becky Collins (Terry), Jackie Pender (Henry) and Wanda Whitmire (Kip), all of Anderson; also surviving are fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Gary was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Carl and Jack Hedden; six sisters, Bertha Parnell, Margie Dietz, Vivian Hedden, Lillian Kelly, Emma Simpson and Clelia Blanton; a son-in-law, Kimsey Harper; a grandson, Jonathon Gary Hedden, and a great-grandson, Gregory Austin Hilliard.
The rosary service will be recited at The McDougald Funeral Home at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, with Friar Aubrey McNeil, OFM, officiating. The visitation will follow at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church with Friar Michael P. Jones, OFM, officiating. Entombment will follow at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Grandsons will serve as pall bearers.
Gifts in memory of Mr. Hedden may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621; or to Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 1200 Cornelia Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
