George Fred Tolly, Jr., age 89, of 4605 Belton Highway, Anderson, died at Richard M. Campbell Veteran's Nursing Home on Wednesday, December 23, 2015. Born on September 27, 1926, in Anderson, he was the son of the late George Fred Tolly, Sr. and the late Ruth Bagwell Tolly. For fifty-nine years, he was the loving and devoted husband of June Gasaway Tolly, of Anderson.
A graduate of Anderson Boys' High School, Mr. Tolly served his country in the US Navy as a Lt. JG. He later attended the University of South Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. For over forty years he was associated with Perpetual Federal Savings and Loan Association in Anderson, serving as Executive Vice President until his retirement. Mr. Tolly was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and also as an Elder. Fred was very active and supportive of his beloved Anderson. He has served as Chairman of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, President and Founding Member of Anderson County Gamecock Club, past Chairman of Anderson Hospital Board of Directors, past Chairman of Anderson Jaycees, former Director of Anderson Rotary Club, and he served seven terms on the Anderson County Council. He also served as a City of Anderson Alderman, and was a past director and Chairman of the City of Anderson Development Corporation. Fred was a former trustee of the John De Le Howe School of McCormick, SC and was a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto. He was also a Past Commissioner of the SC Health and Human Services Finance Commission, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Anderson Area YMCA. Mr. Tolly was a recipient of the Anderson Independent Mail Pointing the Way Award. He was also a Board Member of Appalachian Council of Governments.
In addition to his wife, June, Mr. Tolly leaves behind a son, George Fred Tolly, III and his wife, Sandi, of Anderson; two daughters, Ruth Marie Embler and her husband, Marc, of Charleston, and Sissy Todd and her husband, Monty, of Columbia. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tolly was preceded in death by a brother, Zeke Tolly.
Following an 11 a.m. committal service at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery, a funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Fred Tolly, Jr. will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at 12 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, with Rev. Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 2 p.m. in the Kirk at First Presbyterian Church.
