Gloria Naomi Whitten, age 82, of Anderson, SC, passed away, Monday, December 13, 2021 at AnMed Health Medical Center.
When Gloria Naomi Whitten was born into the family of Claude and Jesse Whitten, it seemed that she was destined to give her life ministering to others. The youngest of four girls (Claudia, Betty, Frances) and Big Sister to Little Brother Larry, her childhood was devoted to her family. This devotion grew stronger and deeper as various brother-and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews joined the family. Gloria was an accomplished pianist and singer, and many times music from the Whitten household could be heard sweetening the evening air. It was said that Gloria sang like an angel, and to her family she was just that.
Early in life Gloria knew that she was called to help others and so applied to Nursing School. She was a natural and patients loved her, not just for her skill and talents, but for her kindness, her humanity, her love for them. Upon graduating, Anderson Hospital saw their opportunity to add this unique individual to their staff and she worked tirelessly for the system for over twenty years. Never would she leave a shift when a patient needed her services or just an encouraging word from her - Gloria's patients were her "family" and she treated them with the same respect as she did her own. Today, there are nurses on staff at AnMed who were blessed to have been taught by Gloria and resolutely follow her example of tireless faithfulness to this honored profession.
Upon retirement, Gloria continued to care for her aging siblings until her own health began to fail. But that love for nursing never was far from her heart and even extended to adopting four legged friends to love and dote upon. They needed her and that's all that Gloria needed to know. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church.
Gloria filled so many holes for so many of us. Her passing has left a terrible emptiness in our family and we no longer have Aunt Glo to fill those holes. Our family grieves for this remarkable, loving lady who has now found her place with her heavenly family. She is survived by nieces Cathy, Robin, and Christi and nephews Mike and Russel.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 17, 2021, at The McDougald Funeral Home, 2211 N. Main St., Anderson, from 9:30-10:30am. Graveside services will follow at 11:00am at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Philip McAlister officiating.
