Gustave John Omundson, age 98, of Anderson, SC, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
Born in West Hurley, New York, on August 6, 1923, he was the son of the late Gustave Nicholas Omundson, a carpenter who immigrated from Norway and the late Anna Huber Omundson of Brooklyn, New York. His early years were spent in and around New York City and at the age of twenty, he enlisted in the United States Army. While serving in military service during WWII, he met the love of his life, a Second Lieutenant Army nurse from Georgia, Mary Virginia Barrentine. They were married for over 65 years until she passed away in May 2011. After being honorably discharged in the late 40s, Gus and Virginia made their home in Anderson, SC, where he was employed by J. Roy Martin Company for over 40 years and they were attendees of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. For over five decades, the Omundsons lived in the North Anderson area and helped cultivate, along with a few neighboring families, a creative and nurturing environment for children to play, grow, love, have fun and eventually become wonderful human beings.
He is survived by one son, Andy Omundson and his wife, Vicki of Greenwood, SC; and one very special great-grandson.
The family of Gustave Omundson would like to express their sincere appreciation to the caregivers during his last few months, including Ms. Shirley Valentine of Senior Solutions, the staff of AnMed and NHC, and the staff at Richard M. Campbell VA Home. The family is especially grateful to the staff of Hospice of the Upstate and in particular, Ms. Kim Evans, for the attention, love, and support provided to Gus (and son Andy) during this challenging and emotional time.
A private graveside service officiated by Pastor Chris Fisher of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will be held by the family.
