Harold Hewin

Harold Lee "Red" Hewin, age 85, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Rainey Hospice House. Born in Anderson on September 4, 1928, he was the son of the late Louie Marcell and Grace Blackwell Hewin, and was the husband of the late Mildred Vaughan Smith Hewin. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church.
Mr. Hewin was a 1946 graduate of Boys High and served in the United States military in both the Army Air Corps and the Marine Corps. While in high school he began working at Minyard Motor Co. as a mechanic's helper and had a long career in the automotive services industry. He retired in 1990 after 21 years as service manager at Sullivan Buick/Arnett Buick. After retirement he worked part-time at White Jones Hardware until his death.
Mr. Hewin earned his Ham Radio license (WB4AQF) in 1965 and was involved in the Anderson Radio Club for almost 40 years. He was a Life Member of Hiram Lodge 68 Ancient Free Masons and received his 60 year pin in 2013. Over the years he served as an advisor to the automotive programs at McDuffie High School, Pendleton High School, Tri-County Technical College and Greenville Technical College.
Survivors include his daughter, Jan Smith Verbeck (Art) of Anderson and two sons, Steve Smith (Margaret) of Liberty and Donnell Smith (Lynne) of Mansfield OH. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Rick Smith (Suzanne), Bryan Smith (Melissa), Tim Smith (Rachel), Michael Smith, Joy Reeder (Jeff), Amy Wagner (Scott) and Erika Verbeck, twelve great-grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. He is also survived by a niece Betty Seawright Hughes and a great-niece Catherine Hughes Phillips.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son Thomas Lee Hewin, and his sisters Lillian Seawright, Louise Phillips and Ora Elrod.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Concord Baptist Church with Dr. Don Cox officiating. Burial will follow at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the United States Marine Corps and Marine Corps League Detachment 1106. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
