Harold E. Martin passed away on June 10, 2015 at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.
I leave behind these parting words. I was born in 1929 to the late J. Will And Ruth B. Martin, the youngest of seven children.
My life was a full one. Service in the Navy during the Korean War took me to Korea and Japan for a number of years. The G.I. Bill made it possible for me to attend Mexico City College and Erskine College, where I received a degree in elementary education. Later I received a Master's Degree from East Carolina University, in addition to further work at Furman and Clemson. I was married to my life-long friend, my love, Marietta Gambrell.
I retired in 1986 after 36 years of service to the state and country, the last 30 as a teacher and principal. I was blessed with a good profession, wonderful parents, good colleagues, students, and friends helped to make it so.
I have requested; however, that no services be held on my behalf. Those who would like to do something will, I hope, take that time to do some act of kindness for someone else. For any of you who may be concerned about my final destination; my God and I are on the best of speaking terms.
I had loving parents, enjoyed my brothers and sisters, and cherished my friends. I raised and rode some good horses, enjoyed a rewarding profession, and have few regrets.
I leave you with this poem that I once read:
When I quit this mortal shore and mosey 'round this earth no more,
Don't weep, don't sigh, don't grieve, don't sob, I may have struck a better job.
Don't go and buy a large bouquet, for which you'll find it hard to pay, don't stand around looking blue;
I may be better off than you.
