Mr. Wilson was a mentor to scores of young people, first as a high school teacher and later as a Nationwide Insurance executive.Mr. Wilson came to Anderson in 1963 and retired in 1991 as District Sales Manager for Nationwide Insurance. Mr. Wilson joined Nationwide in 1956 and was in sales management in Columbia before moving to Anderson. He helped train and was a mentor to Nationwide employees throughout the southeast, especially in The Savannah Basin Area.Mr. Wilson was born in Blythewood in 1927, the eighth child of Charles D. and Kate McLean Wilson. He was a member of a family which was prominent in education, farming, mercantile and civic affairs for decades, particularly in the Blythewood community.Harry graduated from Blythewood High School in 1944. He attended Clemson and was a member of the 1944 Clemson football team. World War II had not ended and he left Clemson in March of 1945 to join the Navy, with service in the Pacific Theater. Like many of his fellow veterans, he re-entered college on the G. I. Bill and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1949. He was a lifelong member of the Carolina Alumni Association. However, he also was a 52-year member of Clemson's IPTAY Association and was such a strong fan of Clemson athletics that even close friends were surprised at his dual allegiance. While at Carolina, he organized the Blythewood Bears, fearsome semi-pro basketball and baseball teams.Mr. Wilson began teaching at Blythewood High School in 1949, where he also was the coach of every sport at what then was a very rural 12-grade school. His wife, Jane, taught with him and the two rarely missed class reunions of students from that era. Mr. Wilson often said that teaching and coaching were not only rewarding of themselves, but also the most valuable experience to prepare him for a career in business.Harry's avocational passion was golf. He became a member of the South Carolina Golf Association in 1969. He served as president in 1974-75 and secretary from 1985 to 2007. He was a one-day tournament director and team captain of a course rating team. Junior Golf Foundation from its inception in 1995, a role that enabled him to continue giving of himself to young people. In 2002, he received the SCGA Distinguished Service Award. He also was a high school sports official and in 1990, received a plaque from the S. C. Football Officials Association honoring him for 39 years of service.In addition to his wife, Jane Evans Wilson, Harry is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Richard Robbins of Florence; grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth Robbins Rotan and her husband, Lee of Florence and Matthew Wilson Robbins of Denver, CO; a step-great-grandson, Ashton Rotan of Florence; sisters, Fannie Louise Dubose of Gable, SC and Margaret Turner of Hendersonville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Charlie, Roger, Howard and Elton Wilson and sister, Catherine Pooser.The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 3:00 pm at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Anderson, where he was a member. The Reverend Dr. Mark Burchette and the Reverend Dr. Greg Skipper will officiate. Interment will be in his beloved hometown of Blythewood in Richland County, Friday, March 27, 2009 at 11:00 am at Sandy Level Church Cemetery.Pallbearers for the service in Anderson will be the Anderson-Area SCGA Golf Rating Team: Dave Thomson, Gene Mealey, Charles Douglas, Paul Manikowski, David Thompson, Maurice Lopez and Flynn Barber. Pallbearers for the service in Blythewood will be members of the SCGA staff.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home, 2211 N.
