Obituary

Hazel Lee Snelgrove Coward, age 89, affectionately known as "Plain-O", completed her earthly journey on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at AnMed Health Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Born in Anderson County, SC on September 9, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harmon James and Nellie Davis Snelgrove. She was the widow of Edd V. Coward. She and her family owned Edd's Caf on South Main Street for many years. She retired from The Singer Plant in Anderson. Hazel was a devoted member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was active in the seniors group as long as her health permitted. Also, she enjoyed participating with Senior Solutions in Anderson. Her mission in life was helping others. She enjoyed visiting, taking food, sending cards, calling and praying for anyone in need. Her greatest joy came from time spent with her beloved family. She loved to hear her great-grandchildren call her "Plain-O" as they ran up to hug her. That brought a smile to her face and joy to her heart. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Ansel, Marvin, and Archie Snelgrove; sisters, Helen Snelgrove and Nettie Vaughn; and a very special friend, Harold E. Franks. Her memory will forever be treasured by her daughters, Sonja Sokol (Ed) of Starr, and Connie Goforth (Ken) of Anderson; grandchildren, Jonathon Sokol (Karen) of Atlanta,GA, Casey Sokol (Allison) of Belton, Heath Goforth (KC) of Iva, Cy Goforth (Farrah) of Charleston, Kari Cross (Brad) of Anderson; great-grandchildren, Lillian, Whitner, Jedidiah, Miles, C.J., Hannah, Sully, Dominic and Chloe; a brother, Willie Snelgrove of Anderson; and a sister, Lounell Cleveland of Elberton, GA. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Kirt Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home, prior to the service, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside Assisted Living in Anderson for their love, kindness and excellent care for the past few weeks.
