HELEN CATHERINE VON ESSEN
June 19, 1918 - February 3, 2013
ANDERSON, SC
Helen Von Essen, passed away on February 3, 2013, after a brief illness. She was 94 years old.
Helen was born on June 19, 1918 in Woodhaven, New York, to John Von Essen and Anna Reichert Von Essen. For many decades she worked for the family doctor, Dr. Rosenberg of Franklin Square, NY, formally as an X-Ray Technician, but truly as an all-around, full-time Medical Consultant, always supplying advice that was cheerful and free but also sound and serious. Helen had a lifelong love of reading, writing, crossword puzzles and Scrabble. After she retired, Helen moved to Anderson where she quickly became one of the true Scrabble Wizards (and there were many) at Bailey Court. Certainly none of her own relatives could match her skill.
She was preceded in death by her brothers John and George. She is survived by her sister Agatha Hutter, of Anderson; her nieces, JoAnne Yuzawa, Susan Brown and Cyndy Von Essen; her nephews, John Von Essen, John Hutter, Peter Hutter, and Robert Hutter; and four grandnieces and five grandnephews. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at 11:00 am officiated by Father Paul Williams, OFM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Anderson County P.A.W.S., 1320 Highway 29 South, Anderson, SC 29626.
