Obituary

Henry Miles Faris III, DMD Henry ("Hank") Miles Faris III, DMD, 43, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014. Hank was born in Chapel Hill, NC on January 9, 1971 and moved to Greenville at the age of two. Hank excelled in swimming as a member of both Gower SAIL and Greenville Gators swim teams. Six of his records at Gower have remained for over 30 years. In his senior year of high school he was named South Carolina Swimmer of the Year. He was ranked top ten nationally in several events and won the Junior Nationals in the 100 yard butterfly. Upon graduating from JL Mann High School, Hank earned a full swimming scholarship to Clemson University, where he was three times named All-ACC and set several school records. He served as captain of the Clemson swim team two consecutive years and received the McCollum Most Valuable Award. After completion of his degree, he entered the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine and graduated in 1998. While in dental school he met the love of his life, Lisa Manning, and they married in 1998. They practiced dentistry together at Faris Dental, he as a general dentist and she as an orthodontist. Dr. Faris was a devoted father and loved spending time with his three daughters. They enjoyed family vacations, riding bikes, playing basketball, and just being together. Dr. Faris was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he volunteered in many capacities. He also gave freely of his time to the Caine Halter YMCA, Kroc Center, Meals on Wheels, SAIL swimming, Greenville Free Medical Clinic and others. His talents will be missed. Surviving are: wife, Lisa Faris, and daughters Anne Marie (14), Kate (12), and Elizabeth Miles (8) of Greenville; parents, Henry M. Faris, Jr. MD and Tina M. Faris of Greenville; sister, Janet Harrison, and her husband Josh, nephew Miles Harrison and niece Mary Caroline Harrison all of Atlanta; grandmother, Anne Faris of Greenville; and uncle, Whetsell McDaniel of Orangeburg. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 2, at 3:30 pm, at First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall beginning at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601 or to Christ Church Episcopal School, 245 Cavalier Drive, Greenville, SC 29607.
