Herbert David Black, Jr., age 94, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2016, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
Born in Rock Hill, SC, on May 24, 1921, he was the son of the late Herbert David Black, Sr. and the late Marie Anderson Black. Herbert was a WWII veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Army for more than 25 years where he later retired. Following his military career, he worked at Erskine College where he served as the Dean of Men and taught education classes. His last working years were spent as a fifth grade teacher at Belton Elementary School. He was a lifelong member of Due West ARP Church where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder.
He is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth Neely of Rock Hill, SC and Wanda Coleman and her husband Jim of Abbeville, SC; five grandchildren, Jeanne Bell, Kristen Gordon, Ashley Carlisle, Jaime Kinser and David Coleman; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Lucile Fisher Black.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Due West ARP Church Cemetery on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Calvin Draffin and Reverend Michael Gordon officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Due West ARP Church Social Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Due West ARP Church at 112 S. Main St., Due West, SC 29639.
