Hurley Edmund Badders, age 84, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Richard M. Campbell Veteran's Nursing Home.
Born in Cedartown, GA, on June 21, 1931, Hurley was a son of the late Herald E. Badders and the late Parilee Parker Badders. He was a graduate of Bass High School in Atlanta. He proudly served his country during his time in the Navy where he established "The Dolphin" newspaper. During his career he worked for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Greenville News, and Anderson Independent Mail known for his weekly column "Hurley Burley World."
He retired, after 32 years, as Executive Director of Pendleton District Historical, Recreational and Tourism Commission. He was a life trustee of the SC Hall of Fame, a founding member and former president of SC Federation of Museums and the SC Festival Association, a founding member of SC Association of Tourism Regions, and was involved with many local historical organizations. In 1997, Hurley received The Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement, Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation. He also received the State Tourism Award, SC Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and a 2004 commendation award from the SC House of Representatives. He also authored several books.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Barbara Storey Badders, of the home; two children, Parker Lanier Badders and his wife, Joy of Elgin, SC, and April Badders McBride and her husband, William of Anderson, SC; one grandson, AJ Badders of Elgin, SC; a brother, Dr. Fred T. Badders and his wife Sue, of Boone, NC; nieces, Kimberley Badders of Atlanta, GA and Leigh B. Lyall of Fleetwood, NC; and a dedicated caregiver, Debbie Foster of Anderson, SC.
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, November 6, 2015 from 9:30 am until 10:30 am with the funeral service beginning at 11:00am in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Old Stone Church Cemetery, Clemson, SC with military honors.
The family is at the residence.
