Carnes, age 87, of 1610 Brown Road, Starr, SC, husband of Helen Rebecca Thompson Carnes, died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at the Hart County Hospital in Hartwell, GA.Born in Hartwell, GA on September 8, 1918, Mr. Carnes was a son of the late Clifford Carnes and Nellie Eskew Carnes. He was a retired farmer and was a volunteer for the Grove Community Volunteer Fire Department receiving a twenty-five year plaque. He enjoyed fishing, camping, Nascar racing and gardening and was a member of Poplar Spring Baptist Church in Iva, SC.Survivors include his wife, Helen Rebecca Thompson Carnes of the home; sons, Ralph Alton Carnes and his wife, Patricia of Lake Secession, SC, Eugene Carnes and his wife, Pat, Thomas Marvin Carnes and his wife, Elizabeth and James Harold Carnes and his wife, Rosalyn all of Starr, SC; daughters, Martha Ann Owen and her husband, Gaine of Iva, SC, Nellie Sue Compton of Anderson, SC and Sandra Faye Woody and her husband, Wayne of Starr, SC; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Carnes and two grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 3:00 pm at Poplar Spring Baptist Church in Iva, SC officiated by the Reverends Ed Hunsinger and Bruce Evans. The Grove Community Volunteer Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, July 17, 2006 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.The family will be at the home of his daughter, Martha Owen, 9000 Hwy. 187 South, Iva, SC.
