J. Roy Pennell, III, age 67, of Anderson, SC, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at AnMed Health Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born October 4, 1954, in Anderson, he was the son of the late J. Roy Pennell, Jr. and Marjorie Frances Williams Pennell.
Roy was a graduate of Oxford Academy and attended Spartanburg Methodist College. He started his career at Superior Concrete and Anderson Concrete. He was the owner and operator of Genoa Club in Clemson. He later became licensed as a ship captain by the U.S. Coast Guard where he delivered yachts up and down the Eastern seaboard. He volunteered with Clemson University by driving the equipment truck for the football team to away and bowl games and traveled with the golf team as well as other university activities. He knew how to live life and was always surrounded by friends. Roy was known for being fun, kind, and always having time to help his friends and family.
He is survived by his sisters, Rebecca "Becky" Pennell Parris of Anderson, Elizabeth "Weesie" Pennell of Greenville, and Edith Pennell Whatley of Pawleys Island; nephews, Jody Parris (Teresa) and Matthew Parris (Liz); and nieces, Sarah Whatley and Catherine Byrd (Chris).
A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 25, 2022, at 2:30 pm at Old Silver Brook Cemetery, 1405 White St., Anderson, SC 29624, with Mr. Mike Rippy as celebrant. A reception will be held immediately following the service at The McDougald Family Center, 2303 N. Main St., Anderson, SC 29621. Due to maintenance at the main gate, please enter the cemetery at the Shockley Ferry Road entrance by the white crosses.
