Born on May 21, 1933, in Quincy, FL, he was a son of James Harold Sylvester, Sr. and Orpha Russell.
As a youth, Jim participated in Boy Scouts and earned the highest rank becoming an Eagle Scout. After graduating from The Darlington School, Jim attended Presbyterian College. Studies were interrupted for three years, while he served in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge in 1957, he returned to college and earned a Bachelor's Degree of Science from Presbyterian College, Class of 1959. Jim enjoyed a career as a sales representative in the textile industry working for Milliken, Islen Jefferson, Turner-Halsey, and Mt. Vernon Mills. He was a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church.
Jim lived in many places throughout the United States, but his heart belonged to Thomasville, GA, a place of many happy memories. In addition to his love of traveling, he was a devoted Presbyterian College football fan. An avid family historian, Jim was very proud of his southern heritage. Respect, tradition, loyalty, family, and love made him the epitome of a southern gentleman.
