James Edward "Eddy" Compton, 74, of Anderson, SC, met our Heavenly Father in the early morning hours of March 26, 2022. Eddy was an Army Vietnam War Veteran, where he proudly served as a crew chief on a Huey helicopter gunship. He retired from Carolina Beer. Prior to that he worked for Sunbeam Bread and Bunny Bread. Eddy was a man of faith and was a proud member of the Gethsemane Baptist Temple.
Eddy was born in Clinton, SC on October 14, 1947. He was the son of the late James and Margie Floyd Compton. He was predeceased by an infant sister Barbara Elizabeth Compton, a brother Hubert Compton, and nephew Steve Compton.
Surviving, are his beloved wife of eighteen years, Gladys Carnes Compton; a brother Charles Compton of Greenville, SC; three daughters, Kim Holmes (Jackie), Kelley Williamson (Mike) and Allison Mathis, all of Anderson, SC; two sons Chris Compton (Karen) of Anderson, SC and Mike Mathis of Greenwood, SC. He was also blessed with eleven wonderful grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Near the end of his Vietnam tour, he was shot down in his gunship with three of his crew members. By the grace of God Eddy arrived home in February of 1968. He received a Purple Heart for injuries received in battle. He also received nineteen air medals, seven with a V for Valor.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 3, 2022, at The McDougald Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 pm. The funeral service will be held, Monday, April 4, 2022 at 11:30 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Sam Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by Campbell Patriots Post 184.
