The McDougald Funeral Home2211 North Main StreetAnderson, SC 29621864-224-4343OBITUARY w/ FLAGJAMES LAWRENCE GILLESPIESeptember 14, 1917 - October 7, 2010ANDERSON, SC ' James Lawrence Gillespie, age 93, of 603 West Fredericks Street, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at AnMed Health Medical Center.Born in Anderson County, SC, on September 14, 1917, he was a son of the late Lawrence Orr Gillespie and Jane Whitlock Gillespie. He was aboard the USS Bennington Air Craft Carrier while serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Gillespie retired after forty-three years of service from the Anderson Mill. He was an avid reader and history buff. He was a member of Refuge Baptist Church and a Mason, active in the Slabtown Masonic Lodge.Survivors include two sisters: Katherine G. Mitchell of Pendleton, SC, and Edith G. White of Central, SC; and his many nieces and nephews: Linda Ammons and husband, Gary of Rocky Mount, NC, Connie Black of Central, SC, Joan Ellis and husband, Bob of Easley, SC, Gail Albertson of Pendleton, SC, Phyllis Irvin of Central, SC, Jerril Suddeth and wife, Linda of Easley, SC, Glenn White, Jr. and wife, Gloria of Pensacola, FL, Jimmy Suddeth and wife, Nancy of Easley, SC, Billy White and wife, Tonya of Pendleton, SC, and Larry Suddeth and wife, Deb of Liberty, SC; eighteen great nieces and nephews; and by a special friend of the family, Pasty Chappell.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of sixty-seven and a half years, Elizabeth Smith Gillespie. Additionally, his sisters: Rosa Suddeth and Eva Nell Albertson; and a brother, Eugene Gillespie, predeceased him.The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 11, 2010, at Refuge Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Joe Pace and Mr. Harold Dyar. Burial will follow with military honors in the Church Cemetery. Mr. Gillespie will be placed in the Church at 1:00 pm on Monday.The family is at the residence, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Sunday.Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Refuge Baptist Church, 219 Refuge Church Road, Central, SC 29630.The family would like to express their thanks to Mr. Gillespie's friends of West Fredericks Street: Carolyn Gartman, Dr. Michael Kunkel, Dr. C.
