James Frank Gilliland, III, age 80, of Pendleton, SC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at home.
Born February 20, 1946, in Pendleton, SC, he was a son of the late James Frank Gilliland, II and Mary Louise Hall Gilliland. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Frank Gilliland, IV; sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Freeman; and nephew, Montgomery "Monty" Freeman.
Jim was a devout Christian and faithful member of Victory Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacons and music leader. He loved bluegrass music, fishing for salmon, and cutting grass. He was also a mechanic who loved classic cars and car shows. Jim could fix anything and made the best limeade and key lime pie. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in Alaska during the Vietnam War and repaired communication equipment all over the state. During his military career, he received Airman of the month, quarter, and year. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years and the love of his life, Linda Sue Woodson Gilliland; son, Robert Michael Gilliland (Tracy); brothers, Steven Ronald Gilliland (Cindy) and Samuel C. Gilliland (Marcie); grandchildren, Anna-Marie Gilliland and Jesse Gilliland; great granddaughter, Stella James Jones; nieces, Kelly Luhr (Zach) and Katie Phillippi (Scott); great niece, Madison Luhr; brother-in-law, Morris Freeman; and nephew Morris "Morri" Freeman.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 pm at Victory Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 pm with Pastor Leroy Thrift officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Victory Baptist Church, 322 Fretwell Dr., Anderson, SC 29626.
