ROY PENNELL, JR.MAY 26, 1924 - June 17, 2008ANDERSON, SCJames Roy Pennell, Jr., age 84, of 1114 Thornehill Drive died on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at his residence.Born in Anderson County on May 26, 1924, he was a son of the late J. Roy Pennell and Sara Aileen Hamer Pennell. Mr. Pennell received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson University and was a graduate of the Harvard Business School (1973 ' 1975). He served in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II and the Korean Conflict. His highest rank achieved was Lieutenant of the Civil Engineering Corp.Mr. Pennell was President of Superior and Anderson Concrete Companies. Formerly, he was the Chairman of the Anderson County Airport Commission; Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board; President of the United Fund; Member of the United States Assay Commission (Presidential Appointment on February 12, 1969); Member of the South Carolina State Museum Board, and President of the Society of Paper Money Collectors.Survivors include his wife, Arden Trowbridge Pennell, of the home; one son, J. Roy Pennell, III, of Clemson; three daughters: Rebecca Aileen Pennell Parris of Anderson, Elizabeth Amelia 'Weesie' Pennell of Arizona, and Sarah Edith Pennell Whatley of Columbia; one brother, Richard Hamer Pennell of Greenville; and four grandchildren: Joe Edward Parris, III, Matthew Pennell Parris, Sarah Elizabeth Whatley, and Catherine Hamer Whatley. Also surviving are the children of Arden Trowbridge Pennell, Linda Lee Senn, J. Charles 'Chuck' Lee, James 'Jamie' Baxter Lee, Arden S. Travers, and Joseph H. Richardson.In addition to Mr. Pennell's parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Patrick Pennell, Sr.A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2008 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Dr. B.E.
