A decorated United States Army veteran he was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal as well as being a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a farmer and of the Methodist faith.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Sexton Cheek.
