James Alfred Whitaker, age 85, of 1344 Farmer Road, Starr, went to his Heavenly Home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, July 8, 2016, upon his death at AnMed Health Medical Center. The Funeral Service to celebrate and honor his life will be held on Monday, July 11, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Arrowood, Rev. Joe Hosemann and Rev. Patsy Hosemann officiating. Interment will follow at South Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the residence, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, July 10, 2016, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Born in Anderson County on September 8, 1930, he was the son of the late John Ashley and Lola Burdette Whitaker. For sixty-five years, he was the loving and devoted husband of LaVerne Howell Whitaker of the home. He was a graduate of Iva High School and later served his country in the National Guard. Mr. Whitaker worked for over thirty-seven years with Owens Corning. He retired as a welder in the alloy department. He was a member of the Church of Restoration in Homeland Park. In his spare time, James enjoyed rabbit hunting. In addition to his wife, LaVerne, Mr. Whitaker is survived by a son, James Mark Whitaker (Jan) of Anderson; a daughter, Debbie Woodley (Kenneth) of Starr; four grandchildren, Brad Donald (Julie), Tonya Ashley (Josh), Jeremy Whitaker (Michelle), and Jared Whitaker; also surviving are nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a son, Chris Whitaker; two sisters, Claudine Howell, Dorothy Shaw; a brother, Billy Whitaker; also an infant great-granddaughter.
