Obituary

Jane Gray Williams Suggs, age 93, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

Born January 21, 1933, in Batesburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Horace Gray Williams and Clara Virginia Rawl Williams. She was married to Forest DeWitt Suggs, Jr. until his death in 2014. She was also preceded in death by one son, Stark Watkins Suggs.

Jane Gray affectionately known as “JJ” to many, was a 1951 graduate of Salem Academy in Winston Salem, NC, and a 1955 graduate of Converse College in Spartanburg. She taught high school math and chemistry. She was a faithful longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Anderson where she held the office of elder. She also served with the Stephen Ministry, was the recipient of an Honorary Lifetime Membership of the Presbyterian Women and served on the Committee on Preparation for Ministries with Foothills Presbytery. Jane Gray was also a talented cook and authored two cookbooks sharing her many recipes, “Cooking with JJ” and “Cooking with JJ II” which went to benefit Hospice of the Upstate. She was a master bridge player and was a member of the Caprician Club and Senior Assembly.

Jane Gray sought to know others in a deep and meaningful way to let them know they were loved by her and Jesus. God gifted her with the ability to make anyone feel they were the most important person in the room. Her southern hospitality was driven by her love for people. Above all else, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who took tremendous joy and pride in her family and loved them all deeply. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her sons, Forest D. Suggs III (Pam) and D. Gray Suggs (Virginia); daughter-in-law, Karen Suggs; grandchildren, Connor Suggs Warfield (Casey), Forest D.
