Obituary

Betty Jean Bryant Bates, a lifelong resident of Anderson, loving wife of 69 years to Harold W. Bates, Sr., passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, at NHC Anderson, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born on July 19, 1932 and was the daughter of the late John Walter and Essie Shiflet Bryant. Nana loved preparing meals for her family, particularly on Sundays, special holidays, and birthdays. She loved baking and crocheting and lovingly shared with her family and friends. She loved collecting dolls, adding to her collection over the years. Nana will long be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, a great mother, nana, sister and aunt. She cherished many long-lasting friendships and was a proud founding member of High Praises Church of God. In addition to her devoted husband Harold, Nana is survived by her children, Harold W. Bates, Jr. (Kimberly), Susan B. Campbell (Phil), and Keith B. Bates (Gaye); eight grandchildren, Bryan "Whit" Bates (Shalamar), Tyler Bates (Erica), H. William Bates, III, and H. Walker Bates all of Anderson, Taylor Campbell Scarola (Gregory) of Fort Mill, SC, Andrew Campbell (Amanda) of Alexandria, VA, Anna Kathryn Campbell of Clemson, SC, and John Michael Campbell of Waxhaw, NC, ;and four great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Cayden, Colton, and Callen Bates. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Cobb, Annie Lee Griffin, Dorothy Morton, Alma Garrett, and Frances Bryant; and brothers, J.C., R.L., and Marcelle Bryant. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The family will be at Keith and Gaye's residence, 122 McPhail Farms Cir., Anderson, SC 29621, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, May 16, at 3:00 p.m. at High Praises Church of God with Reverends Chris Sustar and Dale Dyar officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family would like to express their appreciation for the kindness extended to Nana and to the family by the staff at NHC Anderson, and a special thanks to Geraldine Hammond, Roland Garrett, and Doug Griffin.
