Capt. (retired) Jerry Carlton Gambrell, Sr., age 88, husband of Elaine Thompson Burrell Gambrell of 200 Autumn Oaks, Anderson, SC passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, SC, he was the son of James Pickney and Mae Elizabeth Branyon Gambrell. He attended Ware Shoals High School, East Carolina University and Cornell University. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 22 years of service with the rank of Captain. He is a veteran of the Korean War and fought at the Chosen Reservoir where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
After his retirement from the Marines he was employed with J.M. Fields, Inc. and opened several stores for them in South Carolina and Florida. He was manager for Edwards in Charleston, SC and worked for the Moorman Company as District Sales Manager. After his retirement he moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC, where he worked as manager of the Homeowners Beach Homes at Wild Dunns.
He was a member of the Belton Presbyterian Church and the Elizabeth Walton Sunday school class. He was a member of the Chosen Few, 1st Marine Divisions Association, The Marine Corps Officer Association, The Navy League, a life member of the D.A.V. and V.F.W. He was also the Commandant of the Marine Corps League in 1972 and 1973.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine T. Burrell Gambrell of the home; a son, Jerry C. Gambrell, Jr and wife, Melanie of Fallbrook, CA; a daughter, Diane Runion and husband, Ed of Panama City, FL; five grandchildren, Wendy Culpepper of Temple, GA, Jennifer, Jessica, Jerry and John Gambrell of Fallbrook, CA, two great grandchildren Kyle and Kayla Culpepper and two step-children, Michael B. Burrell and wife Laura of Anderson, SC and Marian Maxwell and husband, Joseph of Anderson, SC; four step-grandchildren, Bob and Joey Maxwell, Meriwither and Sara Beth Burrell all of Anderson, SC; sister, Marilyn Kersey of Las Vegas, NV and brother, Jesse Doug Gambrell of Honea Path, SC.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his former wife, Carolyn Childers Gambrell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sisters, Doris G. Baker of Chester, SC, Myrna Faye Gambrell of Honea Path, SC, Edna Gambrell Griffith of Ware Shoals, SC; brothers, Dean Gambrell of Honea Path, SC, William Harold Gambrell of Honea Path, SC, Melvin Gambrell of Honea Path, SC, Howard L. Gambrell of Jonesboro, GA and Marvin D Gambrell of Honea Path, SC.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at The McDougald Funeral Home and also on Thursday from Noon - 1:30 pm. The funeral service will be held in the chapel at 2:00 pm Thursday with Pastor Paul Bayerl officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
