He is predeceased by his mother Leila Blanche Kelley Shirley; two brother's Ray Shirley and Donnie Shirley; sister Carolyn Shirley; brother-in-law Henry Eugene Pierce; and grandbaby Noah Ray Shirley.
He was born May 19, 1946 and was a graduate of Belton High School (Class of 1964). He was an avid golfer, having played at courses around the world including Hawaii, Jamaica, Aruba, Ireland, and Scotland. He was fortunate to play the Old Course in Scotland several times. Even though Pebble Beach California was among his favorite courses, the highlight of all his golf experiences was when he played at Augusta National.
He began his finance career in 1973 working for World Finance. In 1987 he started Regional Management Corporation with Rick Godley, Brenda Kinlaw, and Glynn Quattlebaum. They began the company with 1 office and sold in 2007 with 145 offices. On August 31, 2012, they rang the opening bell on Wall Street.
Two of his greatest passions were family and music. He had a special music room built in his home as a practice room for his family band "Close Kin". In addition to family events, they performed for the LST-32 Navy Veteran's reunion every year. In his younger years he had a band known as "Jerry and The Wheels" which included his brother-in-law Gene Pierce and his sister Annette Shirley. They once performed on the Ernest Tubb radio show in Nashville in addition to Saturday night radio shows in Batesburg, SC. Music was a big part of his life. Even on the days he was not able to sing, he would still play his guitar.
He was a member of Neals Creek Baptist Church in Anderson from his childhood. As a young man, he served as a Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, softball coach, RA leader, and choir member. He was fondly known as "Deacon". He was a former member of White Plains Baptist Church and Brushy Creek Baptist Church where he played and coached softball, sang in the choir, and participated in the Easter Passion Plays at both churches.
Jesus said, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant".
