Obituary

Howard Jerry Williams, age 94, went to his Heavenly home on Monday, September 2, 2024.

Born February 3, 1930, he lived most of his life in Anderson but grew up near Seneca during the Great Depression and WWII on a sharecropper's cotton and vegetable farm. He was the son of the late Hiram Jerry Williams and Minnie Gambrell Williams. He was preceded in death by his older brother Harold and four sisters, Mildred Rackley, Virginia Evans, Evelyn Dilworth, and Faye Guy.

Jerry was married for 64 years to the late Sarah Whitmire Williams. Their marriage was truly an example of what a Christian union should be.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Wagner (Robert) of Irmo, SC, and a son, Mitch Williams (Jo) of Ridgeway, SC. He is also survived by a sister, Edna McAbee of Pendleton, SC. The joy of his older years was his three grandchildren, Caleb Williams (Jessica) of Monroe, NC, Rebekah Hullihen (Mitch) of Goose Creek, SC, and Rachel Kathryn Wagner of Irmo, SC. He was especially looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild in February 2025. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, each one claiming to be his favorite.

For 12 years he served in the Army National Guard. Jerry also served the citizens of South Carolina for 36 years as a State Trooper. He met and helped many during his tenure and on just about any day, he was approached by someone who remembered him from those years. Jerry was a man of great integrity, humility, and faith. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer for 25 years and as a deacon for over 50 years. He was truly a man of God.

Jerry was a devoted fan of the Clemson Tigers and was the team State Trooper for over a decade. In his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and making furniture, rocking horses, clocks, and bird houses. He loved to travel, and he and Sarah would set out on a day trip to the mountains or a month-long trip to national parks out west. He especially enjoyed taking his grandchildren on trips and he will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 2:00-3:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 3:30 pm in the Chapel with Rev. Dr. Glenn Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
