December 23, 1938 - June 23, 2008PENDLETON, SCJesse Howard Hopkins, Jr., affectionately called Jerry, of 301 Stratford Road, Pendleton, SC and long-time resident of Brookside Living Center in Anderson, died Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Callie and John Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.Born December 23, 1938, in Chesterfield, SC, Mr. Hopkins was the eldest of four children born to the late Jesse Howard, Sr., and Janie Long Hopkins. He is survived by his wife, Louise Sadler Hopkins, of Pendleton; a son, Jeffrey Howard Hopkins and his wife, Ann, of Central, SC; a son, Reece Alston Hopkins, of Pendleton, SC; grandchildren, Jeffrey Howard Hopkins, Jr., Jamison Thatcher Hopkins, and Anley Grayson Hopkins of Central. Mr. Hopkins is also survived by a sister, Linda H. Hill and her husband, G. Stanley Hill, of Roswell, GA; a brother, Martin Long Hopkins (Mark) and his wife, Rebecca T. Hopkins (Becky), of Pendleton; a brother-in-law, J. Kenneth Hill of Fort Mill, SC, along with nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hopkins was predeceased by a sister, Joan H. Hill.Mr. Hopkins graduated from Pendleton High School, Class of 1956 and from Clemson University, Class of 1960, with a BS Degree in Dairy Science. He was the first South Carolinian to earn the American Farmer Degree in Future Farmers of America and also received the Gold Emblem Classification in the Future Farmers of America National Judging Contests in Dairy Cattle Showmanship. He served as a member of the S.C. Dairy Commission and was a past president of the S.C. Young Farmers Association. He was also a former member of the Pendleton Exchange Club and also served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Hopkins formerly owned and operated Retreat Farms, a registered Holstein dairy and a bulk milk transport enterprise. He was a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church where he had formerly served as a deacon.The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 4:00 pm at Pendleton Presbyterian Church in Pendleton, SC, with The Reverend Morton S. White, Jr., and The Reverend William R. West, Jr., officiating.
