Jettie Frances Burriss Nelson, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at her home in Anderson in the company of her family. She had been the stalwart presence for her family and friends with her undaunted spirit even as her physical body failed her. Next to her devotion to her family and church, her flower garden was her passion and was admired by all who visited her. As her eyesight dimished, she continued with her lifelong love of books through listening to recordings and readings from her family. Even in her advanced years she continued to be the keystone of her family. Born in Iva on September 8, 1923, she was the daughter of W.T. Burriss and Annie Hugh Alexander Burriss. Her brothers and sisters were William Thompson Burriss, Norma Craft, Thomas E. Burriss, and Barbara Hanna, all of whom predeceased her. Her husband Adger W. Nelson passed from this life in 1988 following an illness during which she was his dedicated caregiver. She is survived by her sons, A. Burriss Nelson and wife Miriam, D. Paul Nelson, and daughter, Jettie Ann Nelson Smith and husband Hugh. She was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Teresa (Paul). She is also survived by her fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, every one of them who reciprocated the love and devotion that she had modeled for them during her life. The memorial service will be conducted by her faithful former minister, Reverend Charlie Brookshire. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 26, 2023, from 2:00 until 3:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home followed by the service at 3:30 pm. A private burial will take place at a later date.
