Obituary

Jeuel Bannister Esmacher, 98, of Anderson, SC, entered the Church Triumphant on December 6, 2022 at her home. She was the devoted wife of the late Harry Esmacher and the loving daughter of the late S.A. and Allie Pearman Bannister. Jeuel grew up in the 1920's and 30's in Starr, SC, when it was a thriving community. She graduated from Winthrop College as a music major and became the first female band director in North Carolina before she was recruited by the US Department of Defense to be a cryptanalyst (code breaker) during WWII and several years thereafter. Upon leaving military intelligence, she held progressively responsible positions in banking, retiring as a training officer for tellers, new accounts managers, and manager trainees. She was involved in church and community music (choir member, pianist, director) for 65 years, including at First Presbyterian, Anderson, where she was an active disciple and in GAMAC. She served multiple rotations as an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. She and her husband spent many years volunteering through AnMed Health's Auxiliary Services as well as traveling to 21 countries and many states. She also served as volunteer receptionist at First Presbyterian, Anderson, until she was 93. She has crocheted hundreds of hats, baby blankets, and throws for distribution through local and international mission. In 2019, she was awarded the Mary Mildred Sullivan Outstanding Alumna Award from Winthrop University, the Alumni Association's highest honor. In 2021, she was received The Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor awarded by the Governor of South Carolina. In addition to her parents and husband, Jeuel was preceded in death by her sister, Caroline Bannister Broome; a daughter, Karen Walsh, a son, Stephen Esmacher and granddaughter, Sarah Steele. She is succeeded by one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; a niece, Teresa Broome of Chapin, SC; nephew, Ashley Broome of Murrells Inlet, SC, Dr. Robert (Brownie) Schoene of California and seven nieces and nephews in Michigan. Jeuel especially wanted this biography to include her heartfelt thanks to her C3 ELDER CAREgivers and Teresa and Beverley Broome for their loving care, frequent visits, and friendship. The family will receive friends Friday, December 9, 2022, from 2:00-3:00 pm in the Welcome Center of First Presbyterian Church Anderson, with a Service of Witness to the Resurrection to be held in the sanctuary at 3:00 pm.
