Joe Thomas Owings, age 87, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Owings, SC in Laurens County on January 24, 1930, he was the son of the late Wister Robert Owings and the late Fay Simpson Owings. He was a graduate of Gray Court Owings High School. Joe worked for Milliken Peerless Plant and for Anderson County School District 2. He was a faithful member of Latimer Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Racine Webb Owings; his children, Steve Owings (Margaret), Barbara Owings Lanier (Alton), Phyllis Owings Emerine, Gloria Owings Ivey (George), Ben Brooks (Cathy), Vicki Brooks Miller, Melissa A. Brooks, and Laurie Brooks Helman (Joey); 14 grandchildren, Steven Owings (LeAnna), Lacey Owings Pileggi (Jeremy), Lana Lanier Smith (Jeremy), Lindsay Lanier Smoak (Lewis), Deidre Alexander, Cassie Ivey Smith (Kevin), Alana M. Brooks, Patrick McBride (Kim), Caroline McBride Johnson (Zane), Hunter Helman, Ethan Helman, Ferol Moorhead, Mari Claire Ouzts, Sam Ouzts; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two daughters, JoBeth Owings Ouzts and Sally Brooks Moorhead; and siblings, Lois Owings Townsend, Gladys Owings Hughes, Doris Owings Wilson, Julia Owings Adams, Paul R. Owings, and Marian Frances Owings. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Wally Culp and Reverend Andy Bullions officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories. To honor their grandfather, grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
