John Checkovich, age 97, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at NHC of Anderson. Born in Ashford, CT, on October 10, 1917, he was the son of the late Paul Checkovich and the late Irene Vorobieff Checkovich. John was a graduate of Columbia University in New York and earned a Master's degree, in Engineering, from the University of Maryland. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Captain. He served during WWII in the South Pacific Theatre. John is survived by his two sons, John P. Checkovich (Jo Ann) and Peter G. Checkovich; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James K. Checkovich and by his 5 brothers and 2 sisters. A Memorial Service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
