The one and only John Calhoun Edwards died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, November 3, 2015.
Born June 22, 1921, in Anderson, SC, he was delivered by his own grandfather, Dr. J.C. Harris. At age 16, John graduated from Seneca High School. In 1942 he completed a degree in Textile Engineering from Clemson Military College. After graduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, he joined the Quarter Master's Corp, where he developed the fabric weave used in World War II for army cots and military uniforms. Returning to Clemson as a professor of Textile Microscopy, John became an unofficial cheerleader for the Tigers Football team. His career in the stands spanned 81 seasons.
The founder and owner of Industrial Bonded Warehouse, John retired to pursue his passion for tennis and the music of everyone from Bach to Count Basie. Renowned for his enthusiastic dancing, he considered himself the equal of his hero, Fred Astaire. Over the years, his favorite dancing partner was always his wife, Gloria. A life-long citizen of South Carolina, he felt equally at home on the streets of metropolitan New York.
He is affectionately remembered by his family, his wife, Gloria; his daughters, Susan Edwards Willis, Helen Edwards Kerley, and Mary Harris Edwards; his sons-in-law, Jeff Willis, and Gary Kerley; and his grandchildren, Juliet Jacob, Grace, John, and Caroline Kerley.
The family will receive friends after a memorial service held at Grace Episcopal Church, 711 South McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC, on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at 2:00 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, where he was a member for over 50 years, or to the charity of one's choice.
