John Martin Calvin Hodges died Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Hospice of the Upstate. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida June 17, 1925; the son of James Arthur Hodges and Shirley Hodges Anderson. He was employed by State Farm Insurance Co. for thirty two years as a Claims Representative and earned an ACLU designation in 1958.
During World War II, John served in the Naval Air Force as a radio operator for three years and post war as a second lieutenant in the army. He was a graduate of John B. Stetson University and completed two years post graduate study at Stetson University School of Law.
John was an avid bowler, having been Florida State Champion in 1947. He was a member of Anderson Hall of Fame of the Anderson Bowling Association and was active in Toastmasters for many years. He was a longtime member of Boulevard Baptist Church where he served on various committees and sang in the choir for thirty years.
John is survived by Ruth Dickson Hodges, devoted wife of sixty six years and three sons John Michael (Cindy), Brian Dickson, and Joseph Lamar (Ann); four granddaughters, Dr. Maggie Hodges (Cassie), Kelly Reszetylo (Stephen), Ashley Hodges and Molly Hodges; one great granddaughter, Elin Hodges. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren Crosby and Ruel Hodges.
The Hodges family is especially grateful to Cora Campbell, Ruth McMullen, and Doris Williford, his extended caregivers and to the nurses and attendants of Hospice of the UpState.
Funeral services for Mr. Hodges will be Saturday, November 25 at 2:00 P.M. at Boulevard Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny McKinney officiating. The family will greet friends in the sanctuary from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M.
