John Allen MacCartney, age 94, of Anderson, passed away on Sunday, February 05, 2017, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans' Home. Born on November 11, 1922, in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late L. F. MacCartney, Sr. and the late Lulu Gearhart MacCartney. For fifty-six years, John was the loving and devoted husband of the late Rachel Powell MacCartney until her death in 2012.
Mr. MacCartney proudly served his country in the US Army during WW II from 1942 through 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. John received a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He was an architect at the J. E. Sirrine Company in Greenville, SC for many years. Mr. MacCartney designed many private residences and buildings in the Carolinas. He was an accomplished water color artist, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Anderson.
Survivors include his daughter, Libby M. Holliday and her husband Richard of Belton, SC; two grandchildren, Jill H. Deaton and her husband, Austin of Anderson and Blake Holliday of Belton; a great-granddaughter Rachel Deaton; a brother-in-law, R. Carol Cook of Anderson; and a sister-in-law Zella MacCartney of Oviedo, FL. Mr. MacCartney was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Rachel, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie M. Nincehelser and Betty M. Jones; and two brothers, L. F. "Bud" MacCartney, Jr. and M. P. "Mac" MacCartney.
The family would like to thank his friends and caregivers at Summit Place of Anderson, who were his extended family. They would also like to thank the nurses and staff of Richard M. Campbell Veterans' Home and Hospice of the Upstate for their excellent care and compassion.
