JOHN R MCCOLLUM
John R McCollum, age 90, of Anderson, formerly of Honea Path, passed away at the Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home on Sunday, June 29, 2014, which is the date of his 68th wedding anniversary. Born in Hart County, GA on November 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Patrick Henry McCollum and the late Ruth Ballanger McCollum. For 68 years, he was the loving and devoted husband of Mary Frances Baskins McCollum of Anderson.
He attended Goldmine School, after which he proudly served his country in the US Army. He served during WW II in Czechoslovakia, France, Japan, and Germany. During his time in service he earned a Combat Infantryman's Badge, a Bronze Star for valor, and numerous other awards. Mr. McCollum was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. While in Honea Path, he was active in the Men of Trinity Methodist Church and the Lions Club. In his spare time, John enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and caring for his lawn. His work was awarded Yard of the Month on several occasions. He particularly enjoyed traveling all over the United States, including Hawaii, Las Vegas, and beaches. He also enjoyed camping and visiting Walt Disney World.
In addition to his wife, Frances, he is survived by 2 very special, beautiful daughters, Vicki McCollum Holliday of Greenwood, SC and Janice McCollum-Pruitt of Anderson; a brother, Robert Lee McCollum; 2 sisters, Geneva Holcombe (Robert), and Frances Osley ("Sonny"), all of Royston; 3 granddaughters, all of whom he called "Scooter", Christy Holliday Greer (Alex) of Easley, Brianne Holliday of Augusta, Courtney Pruitt Davis (Alan) of Sandy Springs, GA; 3 great-grandchildren, Hadley Greer, Lexi Greer, and John Ryan Davis.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Clifford, Stuart, his identical twin James L, and Paul McCollum; and 2 sisters, Mozelle Tennett and Irene Johnson.
A Funeral Service to honor and celebrate the life of John R. McCollum will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family is at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, June 30, 2014, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
