IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John
Pruitt
November 11, 1951 – November 9, 2025
John Crayton Pruitt, III, age 73, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
John spent nearly his entire life within a mile of his childhood home in Anderson, South Carolina — a place and community he loved deeply. He was preceded in death by his birth parents, John Crayton Jr. and Emma Smith Pruitt, and by Peggy Pruitt and Curtis D. Gillespie, who raised him.
For 51 years, John was devoted to his high school sweetheart and beloved wife, Rosanne Harkey Pruitt. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service to others.
A proud Clemson graduate, John earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master's degree in Administration and Supervision, later completing his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at South Carolina State University. His lifelong commitment to learning was matched only by his dedication to helping others learn.
John spent 26 years in public education — 20 in South Carolina and six in Prince George's County, Maryland. As a teacher, administrator, and advocate, he believed schools should be more than places of instruction; they should be the heart of a community, supporting both students and families. He taught English from seventh grade through college freshmen, coached women's basketball at Laurel High School, and later served as an administrator at Wren High School and in leadership at the District Office of Anderson One. His leadership and skill in securing grants helped strengthen programs that benefited countless students and educators.
Above all, John was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife Rosanne; two sons, Crayton (Sarah) and Martin (Anna); and two treasured grandchildren, Elizabeth Rae and Crayton Smith Jr. He also leaves behind his sisters, Cindy Buice (Jack) and Anna Smith, and their families — all of whom will remember his wisdom, warmth, humor, and steadfast faith.
A receiving of friends gathering and watch party will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 6:00 pm-until at The Lodge at Oxford Farm, 312 Five Forks Rd., Anderson, SC. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Anderson.
