Surrounded by family at his lake house, John Douglas Swizdaryk, at the age of 76, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 9:18 pm in Anderson, SC.
Born August 31, 1940 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he was the son of the late Nicholas John Swizdaryk and Nora Louise Cheesman Swizdaryk. John played in a rock & roll band in high school as a singer and guitarist. He especially enjoyed performing three songs, "Johnny Angel by Shelley Fabares", "Boney Maroney by Larry Williams", and "The Ballad of Thunder Road by Robert Mitchum". He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from LeTourneau University in Longview, TX and was President of the Tau Kappa Delta fraternity. He worked three jobs to pay his tuition. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from August 1966 to August 1968 as a Sergeant E5. During the Vietnam War, John was in the 20th Engineer Brigade and earned many medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
John was a dedicated employee with Owens Corning Fiberglas extending over 30 years of his work career. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church previously serving as both Deacon and Elder. John was a creative and spiritual man and loved to be outside working. He also enjoyed drawing and writing poetry. He devoted his life to kindness as a husband, father, grandfather, family man, and friend to all. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, whom he married August 21, 1965, Judith Ann Green Swizdaryk; his children, John M. Swizdaryk (Jennifer), Jacqueline McCall (Ben), and Jenny Piel (Austyn); his grandchildren, Jacob A. Swizdaryk, Nicholas G. Swizdaryk, Kimlyn M. Swizdaryk, C. Devin McCall, Payton R. McCall, Dalton D. Piel, Jocelyn L. Piel, Alexander P. Piel, and Ethan D. Piel; brothers and sisters, Joyce Dow, Shirley Craig (George), Sandy Huva (Hank), Beverly Kendrick, Bill Swizdaryk (Linda), Ron Swizdaryk (Amelia), Rob Swizdaryk; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church with Reverend David Bailey and Reverend Allyson Helvie officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:15 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at the church fellowship hall before the service. A committal service will follow at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran's Cemetery with Military Honors.
