Joseph Andrew Farmer, Jr., affectionately known as "Bud," passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at AnMed Health Medical Center. He was 89.
Born in Anderson, SC on July 30, 1926, he was a son to the late Joseph Andrew Farmer and the late Lalla Marshall Farmer. He was a graduate of Boys High School, Class of 1943 and Clemson College, Class of 1949. He proudly served his country during World War II serving in the US Navy Air Crew. He rejoined the Navy in 1949 on inactive status later to be commissioned commanding officer organizing CB Co. 6-3 in Greenville, SC. A life-long member of St. John's United Methodist Church he had served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of Ushers. He was the co-founder and president of Farmer & Simpson Engineers, was an Eagle Scout, former Rotarian, and past president of Anderson Junior Chamber of Commerce. He holds the title of Trustee Emeritus of AnMed Health and was a 21 year volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Bud is a direct descendant of General Robert Anderson; Anderson's namesake.
In addition to his wife, Jenny Sullivan Farmer, he is survived by their children, Louisa Farmer Neely (Bill) of Anderson, SC, Catherine Farmer Wingo (Mike) of Simpsonville, SC, and Dr. Joseph Andrew Farmer, III (Kathy) of Anderson, SC; grandchildren, Ross Hamilton Martin (Clara), Whitney Martin Hooper (Brian), Laura Wingo Register (Tripp), Andrew Richard Wingo (Madison), Joseph Andrew Farmer, IV, Sarah Farmer Senn (Caleb), and Hugh Graham Farmer; great-grandchildren, Henry Simpson Hooper, William Bruner Register, and Gioia LouisaValtorta Martin; a sister, Lalla Farmer Barron (Charles); and sister-in-law, Jackie Farmer. He was preceded in death by his brother James Marshall Farmer.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 23, 2016, from 1:30pm until 2:30pm at St. John's United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow in the Sanctuary beginning at 3:00 pm with the Reverend Dr. Kitty Holtzclaw officiating. A private committal service with the family will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.
