YARBROUGH, SR.JULY 29, 1910 - July 8, 2010ANDERSON, SC -- Joseph Coleman Yarbrough, Sr. of 2030 Cardinal Park, Anderson, SC, died July the 8th at National Health Care Center in Anderson at the age of 99; 3 weeks short of his 100th birthday. He was born July 29, 1910, on a farm near Roxboro, NC, the son of Ora Wesley Yarbrough and Harriet Rogers Yarbrough. He was the 8th of 9 children. The family moved to Burlington, NC, when he was 14 years old. When he was 16 he began working part time at the J C Penney store in Burlington. After high school he began working full time. He and Helen Oldham of Elon College, NC were married April 23, 1933. He was promoted to store manager in 1935. After managing two stores in North Carolina, he was offered the Anderson store. The family with their 5-year-old son moved to Anderson in 1939. A few years later, daughter Ann joined the family. He managed the Penney store on the square for 31 years until he reached Penneys' mandatory retirement age. During this time the store doubled in size. He usually walked to work from his home on Springdale Road. The exercise may have contributed to his longevity. His hobby was participating in community service projects. In the early 40's, he thought Anderson needed an active merchants association. This group was successfully formed and he served as president for two years. Later it was decided to reorganize the Anderson Chamber of Commerce by merging it with the Anderson Merchants Association. Some years later he was a member of a group of citizens who organized the Anderson Community Chest which later became the United Way. He served as president for two terms. Later he served as general chairman of the YMCA building fund to finance the first YMCA building on Greenville Street. This was a very successful campaign. Afterwards he was elected president of the YMCA board and served two years. A few years later he headed a local group of citizens in a successful effort to obtain federal funds to operate a Head Start Program in Anderson County. He served as head of the Head Start board for two years. He served 2 four-year terms on the District 5 School Board. He served as chairman of the executive committee of LEAC (Living Endowment for Anderson College). He also served 2 terms on the Anderson Hospital Board. He was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of Anderson and a past president. After his retirement he worked with SCORE (service corp. of retired executives) assisting people who were planning and starting new businesses.He has been a member of the First Baptist Church since moving to town and has served as a deacon.He is survived by his son, Joseph C. Yarbrough, Jr. and wife, Harriet of Isle of Palms, SC; and his daughter, Ann Yarbrough Reeves of the home. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Lynn Yarbrough Landreth and husband, Michael of Naples FL, James Dennis Yarbrough and wife, Elizabeth of Greenville, SC, William Dwight Yarbrough of Charleston, SC, Jim Herring of Anderson, SC, John Herring of Anderson, SC, and Wendy Herring of Anderson, SC. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren: Travers Landreth and Reems Landreth of Naples, FL; James Yarbrough, Jr., Mary Louise Yarbrough, and Joseph Yarbrough of Greenville, SC; Linsey Yarbrough of Isle of Palms, SC; Caroline Yarbrough and Cole Yarbrough of Charleston, SC.He was predeceased by Helen Yarbrough, his wife of 65 years; an infant son, James Dennis Yarbrough; three grandchildren: Joseph C. Yarbrough, III, Brittany Ann Herring, and Marshall E. Yarbrough. He was also predeceased by his parents and all of his siblings: Ruth Tillman, Virginia Yarbrough, Julia Buchanan, Christine Robinson, Clyde Yarbrough, Madison Yarbrough, Wesley Yarbrough, and Cecil Yarbrough. The family would like to express their grateful appreciation for the excellent care provided by National Health Center and Solaris Hospice.The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 11, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Lawrence Webb.
