Joy Lea Parrish

Joy Lea Parrish, age 62, died surrounded by family and friends in Anderson on June 10, 2012. A Memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, June 23, 4:00 pm, at Christ Church EPC, Highway 81.
Born in Tulsa, OK on January 22, 1950, Ms. Parrish attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY where she studied drama and literature. During college she did summer theatre on Hilton Head and later worked in Boston stage-managing independent theatre productions. She completed a Master's in Special Education from the University of Tulsa as a Speech and Language Pathologist, engaging in teaching and in private practice. In 1993, Ms. Parrish moved to Destin, FL becoming a freelance writer, playwright and producer. She served on the Board of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation 1998-2002 and helped found the Destin Festival of the Arts. She was the featured poet at Barnes & Noble in April 2001. After moving to Anderson in 2003, she initiated the Discovering Drama Workshop for teens and pre-teens. Dozens of plays and musicals written and directed by Ms. Parrish have been performed in Anderson and Destin by her students. She was a member of Christ Church EPC where she served as Children's Ministry Director.
Ms. Parrish is survived by her sister Gay Lyn Parrish of Los Angeles and her brother Gil Parrish of Tulsa. In lieu of flowers family suggests memorial donations to Christ Church EPC, Anderson (www.christchurchepc.com), Hospice of the Upstate (www.hospicehouse.net), or the Cancer Association of Anderson www.cancerassociationanderson.org). Burial will take place in Tulsa.
