Obituary

Karen McCullough, age 83, of Due West, SC, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Self Regional Healthcare.

Born September 13, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Donald Detwiler and Mona Evans Detwiler. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harold Detwiler.

Karen dedicated many years of service to the children and families of the Abbeville County School District. She worked as a Special Education Teacher’s Aide, where her patience, compassion, and caring spirit made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students. She also served as a school bus driver, safely transporting many students and greeting them each day with a warm smile. Outside of her career, Karen found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved taking trips to the mountains, where she enjoyed the beauty and peace of nature. She was an excellent cook who delighted in preparing meals and gathering her family around the table. Karen also cherished spending time in her flower garden. Blessed with a true green thumb, she could make almost anything bloom.

More than anything, Karen treasured the time she spent with her family. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will be remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by her sons David Rick Detwiler, Steven Michael McCullough, John Oren McCullough, and Mark Allen McCullough; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at a later date, with details to be announced by the family.
