Kleonickie Bonatsos Stathakis Kleonickie `Kleo` Stathakis, age 86 , widow of Pete J. Stathakis, was born in Scranton, PA on June 18, 1928 to Steve and Coralia Bonatsos and died peacefully on June 12, 2015, as she wished, at her home. Kleo was a faithful member of St.George Greek Orthodox Church in Greenville,SC. She was the beloved widow of Pete J. Stathakis and is survived by her daughter, Alexandria `Koukla` Stathakis, son, John Pete Stathakis, daughter-in - law, Catherine Chamblee Stathakis and two grandchildren that were her pride and joy, Pete John, "PJ or Panos" Stathakis and Kleonikki Ann `Nikki` Stathakis. Kleo has two sisters in Philadelphia, Sultana Bonatsos and Mary Georgiou along with many nieces and nephews that she held dear. She was predeceased by her husband, parents and two brothers, George and James Bonatsos. Before moving to Anderson, SC, Kleo was a buyer for John Wanamaker's in Philadelphia. When she moved to Anderson she became a professional volunteer, working and leading many local organizations. She considered one of her most important jobs to be supportive of " Mr. Pete" in his industrial recruitment efforts. As friends said," She was the best industry "Mr. Pete" ever recruited to Anderson. She was President of the Buena Vista Good Neighbor club, a Girl Scout Leader at Kennedy Street School, a volunteer for the Junior League Afterschool Program and the United Way Teen Pregnancy Initiative. She also served on the Anderson County Arts Center Board. Kleo also volunteered as a Pink Lady and for the Pastoral Ministry of AnMed. Kleo was a very proud and vocal Democrat and attended two National Conventions in 1980 and 1988. She was recognized as Democratic Woman of the Year by both the Anderson Democratic Woman's Chapter and the South Carolina Democratic Woman. She served as President of the League of Woman Voters, energetically registering people throughout Anderson County to vote. Her editorial on "Why I am a Democrat" is constantly requested by those that shared her views. She served as a Founding Member of the Anderson Woman's Club and as its President. She also was President of the Anderson Historical Society and served on the Anderson Board of Architectural Review. Kleo was a Founding Member of the Tri-County-Technical College Foundation Board and was recognized in 2012 with their Order of Merit. Kleo also served on the Library Board as its Secretary during its period of expansion and worked tirelessly to see the Anderson Library built at its current location. During Greek Festivals in Greenville, Kleo always greeted the guests at the food line and supported the Anderson Festival as long as she was able. She took all of her activities and interests very seriously and would lobby/march in Washington and attend conferences around the country to make sure that her community organizations were well represented. However, most important to Kleo was being a wife, mother, and YiaYia and she will be forever loved and remembered by those she has left behind.
