Lawrence Orr Smith, age 80, of Iva, SC, passed away Monday, September 9, 2024, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born March 30, 1944, in Iva, he was the son of the late Elmer Joseph Smith and Annie Burton Smith. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Sally Theresa Smith; second wife, Janis Smith; a son, Steven Robert Smith; and a brother, Charles Smith.

He worked for Fluor Construction Company for 50 years; first as a laborer, iron worker, and foreman and lastly, as an iron superintendent before his retirement. During his tenure with the company, he was rated one of the top 5 riggers for lifts in the nation. He had a strong work ethic and put his all into his work but enjoyed playing instruments; guitars and saxophones. He could play by ear and enjoyed playing with other bands who loved music. He played with Alabama at The Bowery and opened for James Brown. In his younger years, his band had a Top 10 song during the beach era. First and foremost, he loved Jesus, his family and his beloved dog Sparky. He was a member of Rocky River Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children, Kimberly Joann Hair (Steven Hair) of Pelzer, SC, Lawrence Orr Smith, Jr. of Greenville, SC, Sandi Deniece Fuller (Mark Fuller) of Tamassee, and Kylan Clement (Abby Clement) of Portland, OR; brothers, James Smith, of Iva SC, and Duane Smith (Cornelia Smith) of Greenwood, SC; sisters Carol Martin (Joe Martin) of Iva, SC, and Sandra Watt Bostic of Anderson, SC. He had 10 grandchildren, Jody Hair, Samuel Hair, Reagan Fuller, Heather Smith, Steven Smith, Kaylea Smith, Kellie Smith, Jeremie Smith, Joshua Smith, Emily Morrison, several great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends Monday, September 16, 2024, from 11:00 am until 12:15 pm at Rocky River Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 12:30 pm with Pastor Harold Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
